LAYERING TIPS FOR THE NEW SEASON
Here are all the fashionista-approved layering tricks that will keep your cool weather OOTD looking fly.
It feels like this season is all about layering, with what feels like fashion telling us to wear every single piece of clothing you own at the same time…But how do you pull this layered look off without looking frumpy?
GIRLS: BREAK IT UP
An all-black outfit can seem like an endless onslaught of fabric if you’re wearing tons of layers. A contrasting add-on; a plaid or printed sweater or scarf will break up the look and in fact will give the illusion of a slimmer silhouette.
GIRLS: DRAPE IT DON’T WEAR IT
This one-second style trick is the easiest way to make your outfit look way fancier than it actually is. Drape your cutest jacket over your shoulders, like these celebs, for instant cool layering points.
GIRLS: WATCH YOUR LENGTH
A long cardi + a Mini dress = perfection. If your outermost layer packs volume and length, pair it with a shorter dress to prevent you looking shapeless.
GIRLS: TURTLENECKS FOR THE WIN
On the hanger, turtlenecks can look really grandma, but give them a chance. They’re great for layering under strappy dresses or collared jackets… and will instantly extend your summer wardrobe favourites into the new cooler season. Opt for a super snug fit, as it’s a seamless layering look that you’re after.
GIRLS: MIX IT UP
Mix up your neutrals. Taupes, greys, whites and blacks are the easiest colours to mix and match. Any combination of the three will work perfectly, no matter how many layers you pile on.
GIRLS: CINCH IT IN
Accentuate your figure under all of the layers by cinching your ensemble with a belt, or by tying an oversized button-down at the waist. Especially with this seasons throw over blanket style capes, it’s essential to create shape to your ensemble.
GUYS: THE TUCKER JACKET
A denim jacket is a great heavyweight for winter. Use it as an extra layer with a white T-shirt, under a plaid shirt and or a coat.
GUYS: A NEW APPROACH
Rethink what you can layer: A turtleneck under a hoody is unexpected—but it looks super cool styled under a suit.
GUYS: TWO JACKETS ARE BETTER THAN ONE
Keep really warm while doubling up on your jackets. A quilted down coat is great for layering because it’s not too bulky.
